January 2008

Well it’s that time of year again. I’m sure like me you’ve been reflecting back on 2007 to see what worked and what didn’t, and hopefully you’re looking forward to this year - having set yourself some exciting goals for 2008.

Today I would like to share with you some of the rewards you receive from goal setting.

First let’s define a goal…

A goal is a well-defined target that can offer you clarity, direction, motivation and focus. Changing the stagnated and negative aspects of our life is the first step towards creating better outcomes and circumstances.

Goals can be regarded as tools that offer positive rewards:

  • They help you to move your life in a positive direction.
  • They help you form new habits, or change existing habits.
  • They help to improve or develop a skill, talent, or ability.
  • They help you to realize a dream or another important outcome.
  • They improve your performance on a task or activity.
  • They help you to feel a greater sense of control over your life, resulting in more confidence.

But, I’m going to let you in on a little secret…

Making your goals happen is not about will power. It’s about three things…

  1. Knowing the importance of making goals - Decision
  2. Knowing how to achieve them – Direction
  3. Knowing how to stick with them! – Drive

Let’s look at the importance of making a goal. Decision requires self-assessment and some brutal personal honesty. It requires willingness to look at the parts of your life that work, and the parts that don’t. It also requires patience and know-how to create an organized plan so you can navigate your way to achieving your goals with a sense of joy, adventure and self-challenge!

Now let’s look at Direction. You’ve taken the time and written your goals - but where to next? Goals are useless without knowing how to take action. I liken it to having a map, but no way to get to your destination. What’s your direction? How are you going to systemically work towards realising your goals? You need to think about this carefully, as this is what fuels your passion and motivation.

Some of your goals will seem like an impossible stretch, others like a definite challenge and some quite attainable. If you begin your year with an organized and step-by-step plan with timelines and desired outcomes in mind, you set yourself up for awesome success, BUT ‘how do you stick with them’?? This is where drive and determination come into play.

Your internal roadblocks that you label as ‘resistance’, ‘overwhelm’ or ‘procrastination’. These may be the result of your own programming or simply lack of education or knowledge. Deep rooted fear of rejection, of failure or just being mediocre - can be paralyzing. Becoming aware of your emotional limitations is the first step toward overcoming them. Start small, set achievable goals and celebrate as you accomplish each step and goal.

Now you might be saying “but Jules I’ve tried what you are suggesting and 2007 was still frustrating and ended with little progress”. Take heart - help is at hand. If you want to achieve your goals faster than ever before, in a couple days time, I’m going to be launching my once a year Mentoring for Success program. Demand for this program was huge in previous years. So you’ll want to act quickly once the details are released.

Be on the lookout this coming Friday 11th January for more information about Mentoring for Successand our Be In To Win draw.

I look forward to helping you reach your goals this year.

To Your Success!
